ActiveX control appears at top of file

I confess, I've never bothered to learn much about in-document controls
since they seem only to mess things up and userforms are far preferable.
So I don't know how to react to this:

At my office, a document recently edited has just now acquired a
dropdown control at the top of the first page. The dropdown is empty
and the VBE shows no code in the file, but nobody knows how it got
there. The last person to edit the file definitely doesn't have the
background to be using, or even inserting, such an object, and the only
other person who's been in the file is me.

Another odd thing: It wasn't selectable -- clicking the surface of the
control never produced visible handles, black or white. To delete it,
we had to remove the first paragraph (which it sat at the far left of).

Is this a sign of something dangerous? Virus scans on both machines
come up clean.

TIA
