Add a header to a Document via a button

An application I use allows me to add a standard header to document I open by
clicking a button.
Can anyone tell me how to create the standard header (is it a file of some
sort?) and then how to created the button that will add it to any doument I
have open when I click it.

You can create the header as an AutoText entry in the Header style. It will
then be available on the AutoText menu on the Header and Footer toolbar.

Sorry but I don't understand the answer - am only a basic level Word user.
I have a logo and an address that I want to be able to add to documents in
the header quickly and easily.
I have seen somewhere that uses a 'button' to add a picture in to the header
but if creating 'the header as an AutoText entry in the Header style' is the
answer, I could do with some help on how to do that.

It is then time you took the time to learn AutoText. It isn't tough and will
be extremely useful to you. See

simply want to create a custom document template that contains your header
and use that to start new documents in which you want the header. Take a
look at: How to set up letterhead or some other document where you want one
header on the first page and a different header on other pages.

If you are interested in creating templates that will work with the letter
wizard or use that wizard, you should look at the chapter on Advanced
Document Formatting in Using Office 2003 (or whatever your version is),
Special Edition, by Ed Bott and Woody Leonhard. It has detailed instructions
including instructions on getting the fields you want from your Outlook
Contacts for addressing a letter. (Chapter 19 of SE Using Office 2003) You
should be able to get this through your public library or at Amazon.com

Finally, take a look at the letter templates that come with Word. While they
are no great shakes as letterhead, they do use styles and AutoText lists
very well. If you use the same style names that are used in those templates
in your own letterhead for the same parts of the document, you will have
better luck with using the built-in AutoText entries in Word.

Create your header in the Header pane (see
http://home.earthlink.net/~wordfaqs/HeaderFooter.htm). Then select it and
save it as an AutoText entry as described at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/AutoText.htm. By default, the name
of the AutoText entry will be the beginning of the text in your header, but
you'll probably want to give it a more descriptive name. The next time you
want to add this header to a document, View | Header and Footer and select
your AutoText entry from the AutoText menu on the Header and Footer toolbar.
