Add on reporting tools

We deployed MS project 2002 in June, including time entry
functions. Would really like to get some reports out of
the DB. For now I'm exporting data from the Portfolio
analyzer (takes 9 hours to run) into Excel and editing
from there. We've aborted efforts to directly access the
DB; as the DB itself is duplicative and an early attempt
at building a stored procedure caused all kinds of
problems in the db itself. Am starting to look at add-on
tools to facilitate meaningful management reports. Any
ideas?

ps Am particularly frustrated with very limited ability
to sort / include RBS data into views and reports.
Resource managers want to see details about their team -
queries on line take a loong time as they refresh every
time you change a setting.

We have written Stored Procedures to pick data from the DB and show it up in
Excel. Incidentally, we use XML for data transfer, but recordsets too should
be fine. Nothing full fledged yet; we have done only a couple of reports,
but picking data from the dB should be fine.

So, I am puzzled when u say that the "DB itself is duplicative...". Can u
clarify ?

Plus if u can give one sample report u want, I might be able to give u a
sample code to try out

Another way to go about, is by getting the data into a Pivot table by
writing a SQL query for the pivot table [u need MS Query to be installed in
the client], and then using the Pivot to dimension-out your data. Ofcourse,
if too many managers do this at the same time, they will get timed-out as
the dynamic SQL would be very slow.
