Added a gmail account but not working

I recently configured my Entourage X (Mac) to receive Gmail via POP. A gmail
account icon shows up in my folder list. But when I do a "send and receive
all" any new email goes to the Inbox folder in the "On My Computer" section,
NOT into the Gmail section. My Gmail section remains empty. There's no inbox
or sent folder there. This doesn't happen with my Hotmail account which is
also set up as a POP. I see all my Hotmail folders and any incoming email
goes directly to the Hotmail inbox, etc. Why isn't gmail working like
hotmail? Is there a limit to how many POP accounts you can have? Please
help, thanks.

I am not sure this 100% but to my knowledge here is the answer.
Entourage will download all POP email to your "inbox". Other types of
email such as IMAP or Hotmail will just acess the files off the server.
That is why a .Mac or Hotmail account will have separate folders. I
am not sure if that is the correct technical answer, but the short of
it is that Gmail will download into your "inbox" while Hotmail has a
separate tree of folders.

Thanks rick. Still seems strange to me that the Gmail icon remains empty. Do
you use Entourage to access your Gmail? Has your experience been the same
with regards to the Inbox vs the icon?

I use Entourage to get my Gmail, and I have no gmail folded or icon.

I use POP, and never expected that it would go anyplace but my Inbox (as do
all my other POP accounts).

What you can if you want to keep your Gmail messages separate is to set up a
filter that will move anything coming in to your Gmail account to a
different folder, say "Gmail Inbox" or whatever you want to name it.

To get rid of the Gmail section, go into Tools-->Accounts and edit the Gmail
account. In the Options window, clear the "Allow online access" check box.
I'm not sure what this setting does for you; perhaps somebody more
knowledgeable than I am can drop a hint. I use Gmail as well and have it
cleared with no ill effects.

If James has a Gmail icon, does that mean he tried to set it up as an IMAP
account?

I also have Gmail working fine as POP but no Gmail icon.

Gmail has quite nice instructions specifically for Entourage. Linked from
the Settings | Pop and Forwarding page while logged in on the web. See if
they help.

Gmail accounts are set up as POP accounts, so mail received from Gmail
accounts shows up under the Inbox for "On My Computer" (Hotmail accounts are
a different story). Go to Tools > Accounts, and open your Gmail account.
Click the "Options" tab, and make sure the option to "Allow online access"
is unchecked.

If you want Gmail messages to show up in a separate folder, create a new
folder called "Gmail" (File > New > Folder) in the "On My Computer"
hierarchy. Then, go to Tools > Rules, click "New", and create a new rule
under the "Mail (POP)" tab like this:

* Match if any criteria are met
IF Account is Gmail
THEN Move Message Gmail

I don't think there is a limit to how many POP accounts you can have set up
in Entourage.
