added autoshape doesn't appear on slide

When I add an autoshape to somewhere on the slide, once I let it go, there
are only the "spots"...not the arrow, etc.

Sounds as if your default autoshape setting is set to no-line/no-fill.

So, draw the autoshape, then give it a fill color and a line color. Then
right-click and choose "set autoshape default."
