Adding Within Categories

J

John Gregory

Given:
1) 250 ships capable of transporting liquefied natural gas.
2) some ships not in service yet.
3) capacities of all ships known.
4) Owners of each ship (category) known.
Task: By category, list total capacity of each ship capable of transporting
now and, separately, in the future.

Question: Is there a function I can use that will add within a category and
help me eliminate a copy paste nightmare?

Hi John

if your data is structured so that a ship records is in a row & one column
of this row has the capacity & another has the category - you can use either
the data / subtotal feature (sort first by category & whether they are or
are not in service - assuming this is in a sortable field), then choose data
/ subtotal .. at each change in category sum capacity - then choose data /
subtotal again - at each change in "service" sum capacity - and untick
replace current subtotals - will give you want you want)

or use a pivot table - check out http://www.contextures.com/tiptech.html for
details on pivot tables (& lots of other great stuff)

Cheers
