adding words in dictionary

Hi,

For some reason I can no longer add words/spellings in my dictionary in Entourage.

I really starting to bug me, when i try to send a message it telling I have spelt my own name wrong!

If anyone could let me know what i have done that would be great.

Andrew.

Nothing! The add function is greyed out.

I have entourage set to check my spelling before sending, as I used to have the option of ignore, change and add etc - add is no longer an option.

Did you recently upgrade to Leopard?

Try this....

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Try adding a word to
a new Identity in Entourage to the dictionary. If it works there, check
using Get Info the preferences for the file. Use these settings for your
problem dictionary file.

Path for dictionary in Entourage 2008:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Custom Dictionary

Hi Diane

Thanks for the help.

It was a clean install of Leopard for Office.

I tried out the custom dictionary in word, and that could see the file OK and read/write to it.

I have deleted the custom dictionary, restarted entourage and everything is working fine again now. Add button is working again! yeah!

Thanks for your input again.

Andrew.

Thanks for the feedback. For readers following this thread, you can open
your dictionary file in preferences, copy the text and then delete the file.
When a new file is created, you can paste in the old contents.

I'm having the same problem. I'm running Leopard (10.5.2) on an iMac and installed MS Office for Mac (H&S Ed) after updating Leopard (came installed) to 10.5.2). Everything worked fine, but suddenly the "Add" function during pre-send spell checking has stopped working, and the dictionary does not seem to recognize any of the previously added words (like my last name). It also has ALWAYS failed to recognize initials or stand-alone letters. Suggestions?

Diane's 2/7/08 post was dead-on correct. Man! What a pain, though. Thanks, Diane.
