Address book sync with Exchange

I spent some hours updating all my address book entries in Entourage,
thinking this would then sync with Exchange. However, on reconnecting
to the netwrok all the entries I deleted came back and i now have a
complete mess.

So I went into OWA to do it directly on my Exchange data, but now
Entourage just sits there resolutely refusing to update or reflect any
of these changes.

Why is this? Is there any way to tell if Entourage is updating or to
make it do so?
