Adobe Acrobat's pdf toolbar is a real pain in MS Office

J

I have Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional, and it insists on opening its little
toolbar on a separate line, thus taking up some of my screen. When I close
it, it doesn't stay closed. So I uninstalled the MS Office Add-ins, and now I
get an error message every time I start and close MS Word, with this message
"Compile error in hidden module: AutoExec". It's Adobe's marketing that
detracts from my use of Word.

Try uninstallig adobe and then uninstall Office and reinstall it back.
Also rename the Microsoft Office folder under c:\program files.

I had this same problem. I had Adobe Acrobat 5.0 on my computer, and when I
installed Office 2003 they didn't play well together. I uninstalled Acrobat
and both my Word and Excel gave me the AutoExec error when I opened and
closed. I uninstalled Office 2003 and reinstalled it, and I still have the
error. What does renaming the Microsoft Office folder under c:\program files
do?

I re-installed Acrobat 5.0 and downloaded the update 5.0.5 as in the article
below. That fixed the "AutoExec" problems, but now I get a "Run time error
'91': Object variable or with block variable not set" every time I close Word.

Another user who encountered runtime error 91 with Acrobat 5 and Office
2003 reported that upgrading to Acrobat 6 solved the problem for him.
Some users report that they are able to use Acrobat 5 with Office 2003,
but the Adobe Acrobat website says that Office 2003 requires Acrobat
6.0.2 or later.

It surely is a PITA, isn't it? I've got Acrobat v5, and it messes up Word
XP something awful!. I have tried various ways to kill off the PDF toolbar,
and still be able to print to pdf. Arrrrrrrrrrrgh!

By accident, I think I found a way. I changed the "My Documents" path from
the Documents & Settings folder to "C:\DATA" Then I installed Acrobat. No
PDF toolbar when I open Word! I can print to PDF, but adobe gives me an
error saying it failed. But I see a pdf file on my desktop -- size 0. When
I open it in PDF, my document appears, and the size changes.

I would rather put up with a false error notice from Adobe once in a while
than with the dumb PDF toolbar in Word all the time.

Maybe the change of patch for Documents wasn't responsible -- might have
been coincidence, or just sheer luck.
