All email being saved to Sent Items

I am running Entourage 2004 and I do not like to save every
message I send/forward/reply to. I unchecked the Save copies of sent
messages in the Sent items folder
but all my messages are being saved there. I've closed and opened up
Entourage but the same thing happens. I also rebooted my G5 and still
no good. I know I can create a rule that will delete my saved emails
in my sent folder but then if there are any emails I really want to
save I have to go fetch them out of my deleted items folder. Is there
something I am missing or have I discovered a bug?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Allen.
Since you know how to create "rules", you simply need to get a little
creative with your parameters.
Working with rules in Entourage requires one to think rather
"non-linear"
in order to make the best use of it.
Maybe try creating a general rule that either saves, or deletes Sent
mail,
and then create parameters that specify exceptions for certain email
addresses (whichever the number would be less for). And don't forget
that
moving the rules in the Rules list up or down in that column of the
window
has a great affect on the performance of the rules and the order in
which
they play into the manipulation of the emails.

Another thought might be to create an additional folder(s) that the
mail
you specify to save could be sorted out to apart from they that you
wish to not save.

Hope this helps some,

Thanks for the information. Do you think this is a bug in Entourage
2004 using POP-Mail or is suppose to work that way?

Thanks!

Hey Allen.
Not sure where a "bug" would be perceived from what you've described.
Most email clients I know of default to program-included folders, but
allow for some level of preferential sorting using "rules" or
"filters". Some have more options than others, some are more
intuitively interfaced.

It boils down to the quality of personalization. What may be perfect
for you, might be completely wrong for me. So there are lots of
options so we can all have as close to what we need as possible.
Don't think of the "Rules" area as a work-around for something that is
wrong. Look at it as a very useful toolbox to help you adapt the
program's operation to your specific needs.

Hope that helps.

When you uncheck Save Sent items and it still saves them, I call that a
bug. I do this for a living and have seen many things. At work I use
Outlook 2003 and it also has the same option. If I check to save sent
items it saves sent items and if I uncheck it, it doesn't save them.
With Entourage 2004, it doesn't matter if I check or uncheck it, it
still saves it. I know a rule is a workaround but bottom line is that
Microsoft needs to fix this or why bother making it an option?

true, that does sound a tad sketchy. But I don't know that I'd jump to
"Bug" to describe it since there are so many things that interact
amongst all the different setting groups.
I don't know your set up, but one thing that could override that would
be if there is a rule set up regarding Sent mail. That might well
supercede such a primary directive. Don't know that for sure. Need
one of the honchos to clear that one up.

best of luck to you,

ht

I have no rules at all. I've checked all my settings and this to me is
a bug. I wish someone from Microsoft would see this posting and let me
know if there is a fix for it. In the meantime, it just gives me
another thing to check in email. Man do I wish there was Outlook for
OSX.

The exact same thing is happening to me and it is very aggravating! This
did not start until I upgraded to 2004, BTW... Also, some other prefs
aren't "taking" either - for example, when I tell a message "this is not
junk" and to allow all mail from that domain, it is not working either... I
do think this is a bug!

The problem, though, is that Entourage OFFERS an option to UNcheck this
feature (turn it off) so it should not still be saving all messages in the
Sent Mail folder if you have checked to turn this feature OFF, right?!
That, to me, is indeed a bug!

I think it is a bug because it never did this in the older versions of
Entourage - only in the 2004 one.
