All my hotmail is gone

Mehul Parekh

Hello:
I have used hotmail for the last 3+ years. Because my account was old, I
could access it through Outlook Express, which I used diligently for quite a
long time.
I purchased a mac about 1.5 months ago and the first thing I did was install
Entourage so that I had outlook functionality through the mac.
Yesterday, my email was all deleted at hotmail. Why??? I do log into
Hotmail from time to time, and I also use Outlook from time to time now, but
there has not been any period of inactivity at all.
My problem/question is this:
I have about 99% of my email on my winxp laptop, is there any way that I can
transfer it back into hotmail?
Please help, I don¹t have anywhere else to turn because I I just use
Entourage for all my email duties.
Thanks.

Hi,

you should be able to transfer your emails back to the Hotmail server by
selecting all your emails in Outlook Express and then dragging them to the
Hotmail inbox. Just make sure that your Windows PC is not connected to the
internet when you launch Outlook Express, or make sure that OE is set to
offline, because if the emails are no longer on the Hotmail server, they
will also be deleted the first time OE connects to the server to synchronise
messages. Before even trying the transfer, backup all your messages by
selecting them all and dragging them to a folder on the desktop, for
instance. This will create separate message files in the .eml file format.
By the way, Outlook Express and Entourage use the same email file format, so
once you've got your messages in separate .eml files, you can transfer these
files to your Mac and simply drag them into an Entourage folder, and you
should have a backup on your Mac as well.

I can't really tell you why your emails have disappeared; I also use an
older Hotmail account and I have never seen this kind of behaviour. Post
back if you have more info, or if anything's still unclear.

Hello:
I tried what you explained, and I do have a backup of all my emails,
however, the Hotmail mail is labeled as Hotmail - "Folder Name" and I cannot
import that into Outlook Express.
I tried renaming the folder and it didn't take care of it either.
And now that I have basically re-connected with the internet, Outlook has
"deleted" those messages from my XP as well, but I do have the backup on my
desktop. I just need a way to send them back to my hotmail.
Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure I can follow entirely: do you have an external folder, i.e. a
folder in Windows Explorer rather than inside Outlook Express? And do you
have all your emails inside that folder, as .eml folders, as I suggested in
my post? If so, you cannot drag an entire folder into Outlook Express or
Entourage; you'll have to open the folder and select all the individual .eml
files and then drag these into the Hotmail inbox inside your email program.
If that doesn't work, post back and tell me what folders we are dealing
with, and where exactly they are, i.e. inside OE or in Windows Explorer.
