all of my email disappeared when I did an advanced rebuild of my database!

Matthew

I'm using entourage X (10.1.4) on sys 10.3.4.

I have been going through this "can't access mail, you need to rebuild
the database" and "you have to quit all microsoft office applications"
, and the framework X error (still haven't figured them out....) --
and I copied the DB abd DB cache to another computer, created a new
identity, and still had to rebuild the DB. then, when I rebuilt the
DB, it said it was rebuilt, then quits because it says it can't access
the db, and then says to rebuild the db using advanced. ... so, I do,
and it takes a long time, and then it says "done", but, when it comes
up, all my folders are there, but they are EMPTY!

the original DB was 881 MB, and the second rebuild was 1MB...

where are my mail messages....help!!!???

thank you in advance....

Did you try this solution?

You need to copy the entire Identity folder not just the DB and DB cache
files. Do you still have the old Identity? If yes, then just duplicate the
Identity in the Finder and Switch Identities under Entourage in the Menu
bar.

Info on rebuild can be found here:

Diane,
thanks for your reply...

I did try that framework fix, and it didn't work, so I uninstalled
officeX and reinstalled it, and that went away.

as far as the DB/Cache issues, I still am not able to access them,
and, at this point do not have the initial identity folders -- all I
have are those two files, and when i try to re-create an identity,
they still want me to rebuild them...and then when I do a typical, it
says it can't accdess them again...etc, then when I go to advanced,it
strips everything,,,.

I tried entouraid, and got all my really old messages, but nothing
that was in my "inbox" was there...and, it combined a lot of things,
and didn't seperate attachments, etc.

so, this is where I sit: I have the "old database & databse cache"
files...and can't access them.

any other steps?

OK..so, I'm...well, out of luck. but, how do I keep this from
happening again? why is this even a possible feature of entourage?

any suggestions?

thank you....

It's really not an Entourage problem. When you moved part of the files, you
can't expect Entourage to work.

As always, backup, backup backup. This way you can always go back to the
original and work from there.

You can try opening these files in a text editor like BBEdit and manually
recovering the text of important messages. I did that once several years
ago.

Keep a backup of you database, and every now and then also do a
File:Export:to Entourage Archive.

If I remember correctly, Dave, that was in in Entourage 2001 (or maybe even
OE) where there was a separate Messages file in the identity. The Messages
file was mostly text, so it was feasible to scour it in a text editor.
Trying to do the same thing in the combined Database file of Entourage X or
2004 is a very different proposition: it's all encoded, and scraps of
legible text are all mixed up with weird symbols. I really don't think it's
even possible.

Of course, it's much. much rarer occurrence in X or especially 2004, where
the database is much more robust.
Keep a backup of you database, and every now and then also do a
File:Export:to Entourage Archive.

In 2004 only of course. Yes, that's a very good idea. In 2001 and X you can
do virtually the same thing by dragging your mail folders to your hard disk
to make .mbox files.
