Allow use of mp3 files in PowerPoint Presentations

It would be great if you could use mp3 files in PowerPoint rather than wav
files. The would allow presentations to be published to the web with much
smaller files sizes. Thanks for your time and consideration. Kevin

You can use MP3s in PowerPoint. Are you having difficulty? Use Insert > Movies
and Sounds > Sound from File. This doesn't work in PowerPoint 97, but that
version is 8 years old. All versions since then allow MP3s.

I don't agree with you. I have Powerpoint 2002 SP3 and when I try to insert
a mp3 file , a box indicate that powerpoint doesn't succed in insert the
sound from the selected file.
Thank you

Then there is some problem with the MP3 that PowerPoint doesn't like. Where did
the MP3 come from? Is is a true MP3? Is it copyright or DRM protected?

You should take a look at
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm and read section
3 and compare your Registry settings to those in the article.

Please tell us more. Be assured that MP3s can be inserted in PowerPoint. We
just need to figure out what is wrong with yours.

Hi Sonia

Very interesting internet site.
My first problem : I haven't a multimedia folder in the windows setup (even
if I use my windows XP CDROM installation).
My second problem : I haven't an mp3 key in the folder
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\MCI
Extensions

My first question : is my first problem normal ?
My scond question : how to add this key in the registry ?

Thank you for your kindly answer.

Don't worry about the first, since you are using Windows XP. That was written
for earlier versions of Windows.

I'm personally reluctant to tell someone how to edit their Registry, since it's
too easy to mess up if you've never done it before. My advice would be to find
a friend who knows how to do it and ask for help or ask them to do it and
explain to you step by step what they are doing.

Sounds like a hijacking of the file format to me. What other multimedia
software do you have on the machine?

Thanks you again.

From reading this thread I now see that PP can handle MP3s, if they're
imported as Insert-> Sounds.

So, why can't I use MP3s as custom animation sounds? The 'other sounds'
dialogue does not 'see' MP3 files, only wavs.

Global use of Mp3s across PP would make my music teaching much easier, on
account of not having to take huge PP files to school, filled with wav files!

Probably because the .wav sound file is embedded, and MP3's can only be
linked. I agree, it would be a nice feature

If you wish to imbed the sound it has to be .wav. But you can still use
..mp3 sounds if you hyperlink them and include the .mp3 files in your
presentation.
