I am using Entourage 2008. I am also syncing with ICal and Contacts. It seems that anytime I alter a contact in Entourage, it no longer sorts properly. I am sorting by name, which works fine with the exception of about 10 contacts that are located at the top out of alpha order. Clicking the box with the triangle at the top does not solve this whether ascending or descending order.

You probably have the old column "name" selected. Entourage 2008 has two new
columns "First Name" "Last Name". Under View in the Menu bar select Columns
and ˆ your choices.

This did not seem to solve it either. By doing this, the last names were in order, but those that did not have last names (i.e. company name only) were listed randomly. This was working fine, but seems to be getting worse when I edit individual contact names. The ones that are not appearing correctly do not have first or last names. They are only listed by company name.
Other than these few at the top, all the others that are only listed by company name appear in the proper spot. I can provide a screenshot if you can provide me an address that can support html.

I am having this same issue as well. I use an exchange server and I also have
a PC.
Could the syncing format in Outlook be different then Entourage?

I agree with Steve Abrass, it will still not sort it right. This must be
Entourage's draw back. I know it can't compare with Outlook but it should
still have some sort of Sort A then Sort B. I've searched all over the
program it just lacks a sorting setting how you would like it to sort the way
you want it.

For example if FirstName is Null then Sort Company First then Sort by First
Name.

Continued Example

Company | FirstName | LastName:

Microsoft | Bill | Gates
Microsoft | John | Smith
"Empty Entry" | Abe | Johnson
"Empty Entry" | John | Franklin

Well even aside from the confusing "Name" column is there any way for it to
first sort by company then by non company contacts sorting the first name? I
could see for some people sorting by last name works better for them.

Those 10 contacts probably have either no name included or have both
first and last names in the one field, rather than formatted properly.
Ths will not be visible in the summary page, you will have to open the
contact for editing to find out which bots of the names are put where.
