I am using MS Office PowerPoint 2003 SP1. When I apply Title Case to a
selected set of text (in the title area of a slide), the first letter of
every word in the selection is capitalized, including articles ("a", "an",
"the" etc.) as well as prepositions, short conjunctions etc.
This functionality doesn't conform to the Chicago Manual of Style, and IIRC
the MicroSoft Manual of Style (which points one to the Chicago Manual of
Style).
It appears that the case change functionality is common across all Office
Apps. Further, I was told in a Usenet forum that previous versions of
PowerPoint (and hence all of Office, I guess) used more generally accepted
capitalization rules when applying Title Case.
Here are my suggestions, in decreasing order of desirablity:
1. Provide corrected (regressed?) Title Case functionality in Office Apps
that conforms to generally accepted style guides such as Chicago Manual of
Style
2. Provide an additional Case Change option that allows one to specify
Chicago Manual of Style-type Ttile Case capitalization in addition to
all-word capitalization.
3. Provide a downloadable macro that will apply Chicago Manual of Style
Title Case capitialization to selected text.
Any of these would satisfy my particular processing requirements - I'd just
like to see the one that's available the soonest.
What does the rest of the community think?
