Amateur hour at Microsoft

So while syncing with ical, Entourage 2008 somehow decided to delete all its
calendar entries (though the tasks, with due dates remain), and then of
course this empty calendar was synced back to ical, deleting my entire
calendar from both apps.

What bozos we are doing alpha testing for M$ crappy excuses for products.
How could they make such a giant leap backwards in functionality from
Entourage 2004? Not that there was much room to leap back. I just hope
that none of these M$ software "engineers" ever go down the road to get a
job at Boeing writing avionics software.

Yes, I had the sync configured to Combine date from both apps.

So now I have to restore my 2.5G database from tape or the network,
whichever is newer.

I don't understand. It did exactly what YOU told it to do. If you
meant to restore the events from iCal, then you have to set it that
way before syncing. But since the last action on the events was in
Entourage, that action (the delete) took precedence.

I don't understand.

Clearly. Me neither.

As I said, Entourage (on it's own) decided to (somehow) to delete all
calendar events, and then the events (which I had previously synced to
ical) also disappeared from iCal. I don't know which direction caused
the problem, but I find it distressing that

1. I had 6 years worth of calendar data (migrated from Ent 2004) that
was also synced to ical.

2. Now, both the Entourage calendar and iCal are empty.

3. Given that the sync option was set to "Combine", the idea that
this would mean "delete everything" never crossed my mind.

Of course, this all started because I was trying to recover from a
previous sync where recurring tasks syncing back and forth to ical
multiply like rabbits.

And also, because of the idiotic monolithic M$ User Database, my
backup is worthless because my 3.2G file can't be loaded by Entourage
(presumably because Entourage was running when the backup happened and
the database changed).

Sorry, I misread. I thought you deleted everything in Entourage, not
Entourage itself.

It's too late now. Syncing with iCal was a good idea, but it has to be
set up correctly first so it is a one-way sync from iCal to Entourage.
