An API call exited abnormally - What is this ?

An API call exited abnormally - What is this ?

I cannot open any attachments. Everytime I try top open an attachment
-Word doc or even a Pdf attachment,
I get the following error message:

An API call exited abnormally

This did not happen before.
Can anyone pls help me ? I am NOT technical.

I have a fairly new Win XP PC, 2.5GHZ lots of HD and RAM.
