An error occurred while launching

C

Colin Yarwood

I have been happily running Entourage on a G3 Powerbook under Mac OSD 9.2
for 6 months or more and a week ago I went to start up and got an error
message window:

" An error occurred while launching
the end of file was reached
<OK>"

I hit OK and the launch is cancelled.

After reading the advice I tried a launch holding down Option and went
initially for a simple rebuild and when that failed to resolve the problem a
complex rebuild.

This failed too.

I have run Norton Utilities and Speed Disk and rebuilt the desktop and yet
Entourage will still not launch.

Strangely diary reminders I had set up in Entourage previously stil come up
warning me of events!

Can anyone suggest how I can resolve this problem? I have copied the
Database for safety!

That's good. Nowhere do you say which version of Entourage you use. You
can't believe the difference that will make the this case.

If you are using Entourage 2001, there is a limit of 2GB to the size of your
database. (Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure how that
applies to the separate Database and Messages files that exist in 2001.) In
Entourage X, post SR-1, the limit is 4 GB, and you are notified as you get
close. The fact that you weren't notified, and can't rebuild, indicates that
you're probably at or over the limit, and that you have either 2001 or
pre-SR1 X.

Whether you have 2001 or X, go to the MacTopia website/Downloads
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx>. In the case of 2001, download
at least the Office 2001 Service Release 1 updater - you should apply the
Hotmail and various Security updates too - sometime they also had other
fixes. In the case of Entourage X, download and apply the Office 10.1.2
updater, maybe the Office 10.1.4 updater after that (it included more
improvements to the rebuilder). Make sure you have more free disk space on
the hard drive where the data base lives than the size of your Identity
folder. If you're in OS X, go to Applications/Disk Utility and Repair Disk
Permissions.

Then try an Advanced Rebuild again. If you have Entourage X, updated, I can
pretty well guarantee that it will rebuild this time. If you have Entourage
2001, it's much iffier - quite possibly not. If not, all you can do is open
the Messages file in a text editor like BBEdit or Tex-Edit Plus and salvage
all the text that is not garbled there for reference, and start life again
in a new identity.
