AOL Incoming Mail Server?

E

Eric91411

I'm trying to set up Entourage for the first time and it's asking for
the AOL Incoming Mail Server. AOL told me imap.aol.com but that's not
working. Anybody know what it is really supposed to be? If AOL
themselves don't know I'm in trouble I guess...Eric

Define 'not working'. Are you getting error messages, and if so, what do
they say.

You will probably need to turn authentication on in the 'advanced sending
options' in the account settings. Try using 'same as receiving mail server'

Does anyone have an idea about the following?

I have Entourage 2004 running on a Power Mac G5 Quad, 4.5GB memory, 10.4.8.

Latest versions are present and accounted for.

I have a recurring schedule to send and receive messages every 5 minutes.

Most of my accounts use IMAP, and I have a broadband connection with 12
megabits downloads.

Every so often, this process stalls. It is only restarted when I actually
click on the INBOX, in which case, it suddenly connects to the server to
play catch up.

I see the same problem on a 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Maybe this has been dealt with before, but does anyone have an idea why this
happens and what can be done about it?

Hi Eric,

Here are my settings for AOL in Entourage:

- It¹s set up as an IMAP account, not a POP account.

- My email address is [email protected], but my Account ID is just username.

- IMAP server is imap.aol.com

- None of the 'advanced receiving options' are selected.

- Under "Options" (the button along the top row of the Edit Account window,
not the one under the Receiving mail section), I have selected "Send
commands to server simultaneously", "Always download complete message
bodies", "Only connect to Inbox" and "Check for unread messages in
subscribed folders".

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Steve Blum

Hi Gene!

Possibly one of your accounts is causing the hanging. You can
troubleshoot by temporarily disabling the Send & Receive "All" and
create a new schedule to Send & Receive just a few accounts at a time.
Start with a handful of accounts and then if things work well you can
add an account or two each time.

Also, do you have your IMAP accounts set to Live Sync under Options in
each account? If so, try disabling this.

Hope this helps! bill

All of these accounts, except two (.Mac and AOL) are managed by the same
hosting service, so performance shouldn't be an issue; they are highly,
highly rated. But I will disable those two, or put them on a different
schedule.

I will disable Live Sync, if you think that's going to help.

Peace,
Gene

One more thing: This is already disabled.

I wanted to give you an update on this.

I cannot see any particular account as causing this symptom.

It goes through the normal Send & Receive All schedule as specified and
completes the schedule without errors.

But you don't actually see new messages displayed without clicking on an
INBOX, in which case it'll sometimes reconnect and then update with the
messages that arrived.

Suggestions?

Peace,
Gene

Thanks Adam for the link to the directions! They worked fine. Thanks
to you Gene too, I believe it was a POP vs. IMAP thing. The walk-thru
I did yesterday had me set up a POP account. Then today I was unable
to change it to an IMAP (couldn't see how). So I created a new IMAP
account per the link Adam sent and deleted the POP one. Works great!

I just wanted to update this post with the fact that I have tested the
very same accounts with the current Thunderbird 2.0b1 beta, and there is
no stalling, no delays. It works perfectly fine.

For various reasons, I'd rather use Entourage 2004 if I can, but the
existing problem with message updating is a show-stopper.

Any ideas, anyone?

Peace,
Gene

yep...leave entourage until microsoft makes it a universal binary that
doesn't hijack your computer (read: spinning beachball of death)
whenever it decides to sync to your server. i've been using eudora
since claris emailer 2.0 imploded on me. i only played with other email
apps until qualcom announce it was dropping development of eudora. now
i'm using thunderbird 1.5.0.9 (not interested in risking data loss
using a beta for email).

with neooffice and thunderbird, there's not much missing...except the
microsoft fee.

You make a great point, although I don't see spinning beachballs here.

In any case, I went with the beta since it seems completely stable in
every respect.

Gene
