App Named "Palm Desktop Support"

I have heard that in order for HotSync to function properly, both Transport
Monitor and Palm Desktop Support have to be running (in the background,
presumably). On my machine, Palm Desktop Support is never running, even if I
put it in my Startup Items.

Could this be the source of my Entourage HotSyncing woes?

How are you attempting to put it in your Startup Items? I believe mine was
installed automatically on installation of Palm Desktop. I would manually
add it by opening System Preferences, selecting Accounts, then my username,
then clicking on the Startup Items tab. That's probably how you did it, but
I just wanted to it clear.

A way to check to be sure it is installed is to use Activity Monitor (found
in your Utilities folder. On the filter line, type in the word Palm, and you
should see a Palm Desktop Background. It generally has a low Process ID,
therefore you wouldn't see it via the Top command in a Terminal window
unless you to hide your dock, and extend the Terminal window to take up the
entire vertical length of your screen. Even then, depending on how low an ID
it is, you might not see it. Mine is currently set to 478, and Transport
Monitor is 479. With these low PIDs, they become the very last two
processes I am able to see in the Terminal window. There are other PIDs that
are lower, and I wouldn't see them unless I use Activity Monitor.

I have no definite proof that the Palm Desktop Background as listed in
Activity Monitor is indeed Palm Desktop Support as stated in the Startup
Items. I have just always assumed that they were the same.

Yes, I simply dragged-and-dropped it from inside the Palm Desktop
application "Package" after doing "Show Package Contents".

Yes, interesting, isn't it? I notice that when I install Palm Desktop 4.2.1,
Transport Monitor shows up in Activity Monitor but not Palm Desktop Support;
however, if I install Palm Desktop 4.1, both Transport Monitort and Palm
Desktop Support show up as processes in the Activity Monitor. Is this a clue
perhaps?

I *believe* that Palm Desktop Background and Palm Desktop Support are two
separate resources. While the former can be successfully run in Panther as a
Login item, the latter cannot. Whether any of this makes HotSyncing possible
is anyone's guess.

Sam,

I sympathise with your dilemma. I have just transferred all my data to a new
PowerBook, using the transfer program that comes with a new Mac and that
will transfer all you want from your old Mac to your new Mac. It did a
great job and I was thinking that all was working really well including
synching my Treo 600 to Entourage, when all of a sudden I was unable to
synch, experiencing the same symptoms as you. In the end, I had to download
the latest version of Palm Desktop (v4.01 I believe), and install it to get
the Palm Desktop Background and the Transport Monitor to be shown and
working correctly in my startup items. Then I reinstalled the Entourage
Conduit and restarted my computer, and then hey presto, it all works without
fail. I suggest you do this and see how you go.

Also, make sure you have the the Connection Settings in Hotsynch Manager
configured correctly for the connection type you are using. I'm working
quite happily now. I hope it works for you.

I'm not too sure about what devices work with the standard conduits, but I
would guess that if you can use the regular Hotsync software to sync between
Palm Desktop and your Treo, then these will work for you.

The Entourage Conduit will sync your calendar, tasks, Address Book, and
Notes. This conduit can be found on your Office CD (assuming you are using
Office 2004)

Ligature Technologies Mailcourier will sync your e-mail
<http://www.ligaturetech.com/mailcourier.html>.

Documents To Go will sync your Office documents (and others)

There are other apps for Office docs, but this is what I use.
