OK, I see what you are saying.
In the case I am dealing with the Excel application is on a Windows
workstation and I need to know the operating system on the server the Excel
app is connecting to. This server could be running on Unix.
I could just get the path of a known file and see if contains a "/"
character.

I still don't get your Problem

Excel opens only files on "DOS"-file-systems, either direct or
simulated (like Samba)

Andi,

OK, let me try to explain.
In this case there is an Excel add-in that has been loaded in Excel. This
add-in is in a folder on the local drive.
When Excel starts this add-in will open (but not load or install, so it
won't show under Tools, Add-ins) another add-in that is in a folder on the
Unix server.
This file gets opened fine, but it needs to know the path separator on the
Unix server.
Hope this makes it a bit more clear.

and this add_in is on a Samba-Share ?? I don't know any posibility to
read ext2 or another unix-file system, but maybe I am wrong.

I have changed the code now so that the
local PC will first copy this add-in from the Unix server to the local PC
and then
open it.
