Archive does not work for me

B

BB

I just tried to archive one of my projects.

I selected a specific project and also selected to keep all items in
Entourage.

The archiving process starts, but then fails with the following message:

"There was a problem saving one of your messages. Your office database may
be damaged. Start the Database Utility to verify your database."

I've verified the database. No problems indiciated. Archive still fails

I've compacted the database. Archive fails

I've rebuilt the database. Same problem.

Trying different projects give the same result.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bo

If the error message isn't completely wrong (those messages are written by
human beings who anticipate a particular error but may not even be aware
that some other error, as yet undiscovered, can trigger an error too), there
may still be a problem with one of the messages as far as archiving is
concerned.

If you _really_ want to track this down and be the pioneer who perhaps
discovers the condition triggering this error - which enabled the Entourage
programmers to fix it for a later release - move all your project messages
to another folder, select them, and "undo" the project identification for
them (check "None" after right-clicking on a message and selecting
Projects).

Now try an archive. Does it work? If not, the error message is bogus. If it
does work, move half the messages back to the Project Watch folder and
assign the Project to them again. Archive. If it works, undo the project,
move them back to the "extra" folder and replace with the other half, to
which you now assign the Project, and archive. This one should fail.
Whichever group fails, remove half of its message, de-Project them back to
the extra folder, etc. Eventually, you ought to be able to narrow it down to
just one (or a few) messages.

Is there anything obviously distinctive about the problem message(s)?
Anything that could be tested with some other message somewhere in your
database by assigning it the Project and checking? If so, let us know. If
not (or even if so) one of the MS people checking here may ask you to send
them the message as an attachment. (If they don't, I'll prod them!)

See how it goes, if you have the stamina for this. These are still very
early days with archiving - I'm sure there's a lot to be discovered.

I think I have solved it.

One of my folders had a ":" in its name. Exploring the contens of the
archive file (which was created even though no mails were exported) I found
that the directory "Folders on my computer" contained folders up to and
including the folder with the ":" in the name, but not any folders after it.

I have now renamed the offending folder and it works. Even though the use of
":" in file names is not allowed, I think that Entourage should be explicit
about not allowing it in folder names either. I still consider this to be a
bug of sorts, but I'm glad that I found a workaround.

Better would be a coercion that substitutes "-" for ":" and "/" when making
archives or dragging folders to hard disk. That's good to know, though. See
what I mean? The error wasn't actually with a message at all, as it said it
was, but with a file specification for a folder name.
