Archive.pst does not decrease

When I delete batches of e-mails from my archive, the pst
file does not get any smaller. What action can I take. It
is already compressed. I decompressed it and then
compressed it again. This did not help.
Advice please
It is OL97.

Rightclick the root folder (Outlook Today)-> properties-> button Advanced->
button Compact Now...
