archiving old emails

Is there a way to archive some, but not all, old emails? I'd like to
be able to archive, say, anything older than 6 months. I have
thousands in my Inbox, and I can't see how to select a whole load of
emails without having to Select them one-by-one. And in future, can I
give an instruction that all emails older than a certain age should
automatically be moved to a different folder?

Yes, you can use a Custom Mail View. See example:

Using the custom view will not be automatic though. You will need to set a
Task to remind you every six months to run the custom view. Make sure it's
recurring so that it creates a new task when it's completed.
