Are useless public folders annoying you? Here's a solution...

Since you can't "unsubscribe" to public folders in this somewhat
pathetic update to Entourage, here is a workaround I figured out and
which seems to be working.

Set the category of the "public folders" folder to "junk". Then, under
your advanced account options, set it to "synchronize all items except
those in this category" and choose "junk" for that category.

Of course, if "junk" is a useful category to you, designate some other
category for this purpose.

Hope this helps!

This workaround won't work. See Paul Berkowitz's response the threat "Public
Folders dominate my CPU" for a solution that will work.

This workaround won't work.

You are correct, what I suggested above doesn't seem to work ... you'd
have to go down every level and put every public folder in the
category you designate not to sync, that would be a pain, new folders
would show up anyway, etc.

HOWEVER, I think the idea below DOES work. I've had it working this
way all afternoon and seems not to be checking public folders.

1. create a category called "sync" or something
2. designate the folders you *do* want to sync as that category
3. in advanced account settings, choose to only sync folders in that
category.

Seems to work for me.

Or I'll just tell you how to do this and save you the trip.
Using typical Microsoft obscuration, to disable the updating of your public
folders, go to Accounts, Exchange Accounts, find your account and hit EDIT,
then find the Mail tab. Under the RECEIVING MAIL there is an Advanced
options button. Hidden in there you will find a checkbox for CHECK FOR
UNREAD MESSAGES IN ALL FOLDERS.

Sheesh.

Gil, I truly appreciate the help (and dude, I hope your skin is thick), but
for crying out loud, why is this switch buried in this weird place?

I agree...what a way to bury something rather important...updating the
public folders was bogging me down in "network operation still in progress".

Thanks a bunch.
