I am working on our department's intranet site and have been asked if FrontPage XP includes the ability to passcode protect a section so that only individuals with this passcode can enter this area. I have some files that someone else that are .ASP files. Login, Validate, priviate, and an access database. They are supposed to work but they do not . I feel that I am 99% there on that one but can not get the author to offer any addtional help. Really want to get this type of passcode protection on some private pages. Can you help? Can you offer any suggestions on where to get help or someone to pay if neccasary to complete the task. Please emal me at (e-mail address removed)

Front page and its competitors are page makers, not
protectors. To protect a page there are a variety of ways.
The best way is server based and is a function of IIS.
There are 3rd party programs out there such as Page
Protector Pro from MD Webs Unlimited. The third option is
to write your own, and it sounds like that is what is being
used here. If no-one else chimes in on helping you then I
will give it a shot, as what you have sounds similiar to
what I am using.

Thank you for responding regarding my asp files. I found some info under office xp help but that does not work either(hyperlink below.

http://office.microsoft.com/assista...ID=HA010346951033&CTT=4&Origin=CH010715621033

What is this? This seems very easy but does not work. Any suggestions?

If you want me to send you the asp files that were created for me ...I will. Like I said earlier I believe that I am 99% there and can not get completed. (they are not talking to each other. )

Hi James,
Mike is right about FrontPage being an editor and not a
script writer. You can certainly write your own script if
you know ASP. I have two suggestions. One is to ask your
host to password protect a folder. Anytime some tries to
access the folder, they have to enter a username and
password. The usernames and passwords are kept in a text
file on the server which you can edit and then FTP it to
the server. This is probably the easiest. The other way is
to use a free or inexpensive login script. You can find
plenty at this site: www.aspin.com. I use this site
everyday and I have found some very useful scripts.

Regards,
Bob

Hello James,

What you are asking help with is called 'authentication' and many
articles have been published. See if you can get something from such
articles that help you understand how to deploy the resources you
now have.

Google: "asp"+"authentication"

I've used ASP/VBS/JavaScript many times to script authentication
solutions for Intranet and/or Internet projects. There are nuances that
the $24.95 'solutions' with their hidden costs do not resolve as you'll
begin to surmise when you do your due diligence.

If you find you need professional assistance please call on me...

Or since it's an Intranet site, just put the required pages inside of their
own subweb and set unique permission on it in FrontPage. You can then
easily assign Browse access just to those who should be able to access right
within the FrontPage UI.

The problem with this solution is that it requires manually intervention
which is fine if you do not wish to automate the process and the site
subscription rate is small.

clintonG,

How can you make such a statement as, "There are nuances that the $24.95
'solutions' with their hidden costs do not resolve as you'll begin to
surmise when you do your due diligence." AFAIK, you have no knowledge of our
product and therefore can not offer advice about it. We have thousands of
novices using our product that are very happy with it. Apparently, you've
not done the due diligence yourself.

I loaded the Page Protector Pro page via the URL used to refer to it.
SEE: http://www.websunlimited.com/order/Product/PagePro/pagepro.htm

What I observed was a $24.95 'solution' that alluded to support user
authentication. That is correct is it not?

If so, the 'fine print' also stated that Page Protector Pro product
also required JBots to function. That too is correct is it not?

You do not give JBots away for free do you?

J-Bots are not required to use Page Protector Pro. What "fine print" are you
referring to?

BTW we didn't "allud" that Page Protector Pro provides user authentication.
It does provide it.
