Assigning a name a number

K

Kristyna

I know it sounds confusing....but I will try to explain
anyway.
I have a classifying system in Excel 2003, where I have
three words (low, medium, high).
To make formulas work, I need to assign each word a
number (i.e. If the word in C3 is low, then the value
corresponding to that is 1.25; If the word in C3 is
medium, then the value corresponding to that is 1.00; If
the word in C3 is high, then the value corresponding to
that is 0.75)

If someone can explain this, I would greatly appreciate
it.
Thank you

Hi Kristyna,

Try:

Insert | Names | Define | in the Names box type low | in the Refers to box
type =1.25

Repeat for Medium and High

The defined names low, medium and high can then be used in formulae.

Hi Kristyna,

This might work for you:

=if(C3="low",1.25,if(C3="medium",1,0.75))

Or perhaps, you might try this

=if(C3="low",1.25,if(C3="medium",1,if(C3="high",0.75,"")))

This second formula will return a blank in your chosen cell if C3 i
either blank or contains any other word besides "low", "medium" an
"high."
