Assignment Units change

Hi All,

I am facing a weird problem in Project 2000.
Following is the scenario...

I make a new task 'Task' with duration 10 days and work effort as 55
hours. Now, i assign two resources with units 105% and 95% respectively
and then press ok. To my surprise, the duration changes to 5.26 days
and assignment units change to 72% and 65% respectively.

Now, again , if i manually change the units back to 105% and 95%
respectively, the duration changes to 3.62 days.

Why didn't Project show the duration as 3.62 days at the first
instance?

Any help would be appreciated.

Amit

Hi,

Must be weird indeed!
I tried about everything (different task types, assigning the resources one
by one or two at the time..) but I can never produce this intermediate step
of 5.26 days.

What is your task type?
Is Effort Driven On?
Do you assign the resources one by one or two in one go?

Greetings,

Thanks Jan..

The task type is the default Fixed Unit - Effort driven and i assigned
the resources two in one go.

Hi,

So when I do the following
New task
Enter 10 days as duration
Enter 55 hours of work
Assign R1(95%) and R2(105%) to the task through Task Information to ensure
the introduction is in one go
Duration is now 3.62, no intermediate value.
Sorry I can not reproduce your problem.

Hi Amit,

To reinforce Jan's post, I can't reproduce your problem either. :( Have you
tried this on a new project?

Thanks a lot , Jan and Mike.

I tried the same thing using Task form and it worked fine.

I was actually using the Project's Gantt view for entering the task's
duration and work. And, then by double clicking it, i used to assign
resources to the task. This combination produced the results described
in my first post. I am curious to know the reason behind it.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Jan,

Are you using Project 2000? I am getting this problem in 2000 version.
Can you please try doing this from Gantt view in Project 2000?

Thanks,
Amit

I've done it in 2000 from the start and I never ever see the 6 days.

There is something terribly wrong with my project software for it to
show these weird results :-(

Thanks a lot.

I'll concur with my compatriots - When I try it, it goes to 3.62 days in the
first go.

As a sidebar note - how can you have a resource work 105%? That mean he's
working faster than his maximum possible rate, a physical impossibility.
"105%" assignment means that during 100 hours of working time according to
his work schedule calendar, he somehow manages to generate the output that
normally requires 105 man-hours of work. That super-human productivity just
can't happen. MSP allows for resource assignments over 100% for those
circumstance where a single resource name applies to a group of several
individuals who one chooses not to distinguish by name, like 3 carpenters
would be "Carpenters, 300%." If by 105% you mean that he works some
overtime, like putting in some extra time after his official workday ends,
that's not the best way to go about it.
