Usually most people come to me with the question: I just modified an
attachment but I can’t find it any longer, where did it go? And my answer is
its there where you saved it. The reply to that is that they haven’t even
saved it. After some thoughts I discovered that they will often open the
email attachment and edit it. Now Outlook will save the attachment in the
Temporary files folder with a non user friendly filename. I was wondering if
it will be possible to sort of transferring the attachments data in a
"virtual" unsaved file or even change the "Open" and "Save" commands to a
single one like "Retrieve", "Detach" or "Save to disk".

then teach the users to modify their behavior - the easiest way is to use
File, Save as if they want to save changes.

The file in the temp folder uses the same name as the original file.
