Auto assign numbers to a form?

Is there a way to auto assign an incremental number to visitors using a
form? I want a way to record each transaction and have a unique number
assigned to it automatically. (ie: 001, 002, 003, 004... etc.)

I'm hoping you are using a database - if so, then yes. Are you trying to
assign numbers to an email reply?

I am trying to assign numbers to recognize the different orders. (John Doe
is number 024, Jane Doe is number172) Numbers should be sequential.

Not saving as a database, but I'm saving to a ".csv" file. I'll be honest,
I don't know anything about databases or how to use them effectively. Is
that what MS Access is for? What's a good place to start using it? Is a
".csv" file just as good (Excel)?
