Auto lines

word want to put in lines before and after numbering. I can't get rid of
the lines without getting rid of the numbering!

Which version of Word? How are you creating the numbering?

Have you tried going to Format/Borders and Shading and making sure no
borders are defined?

I don't know of a 2004 version. Have I missed something?

How are you creating your numbering?

See: How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word
document

isn't how you set up your numbering, it is time to start over.

Formatting of automatically numbered styles is controlled both in the style
and primarily in the attached list template. I also suspect that there is a
border in there somewhere.
