Auto update contacts in Distribution List?

I've been living under what I've learned to be a false assumption....

If I change an email address for a contact, who is also in a distribution
list, I was assuming the distribution list would automatically update with
the new address. WRONG. I've found I have to open the distribution list
and click "Update Now" for it to update. It's a pain trying to remember
what distribution lists a contact might be in.

Is this a quirk? "Feature?" Bug? or am I doing something incorrectly?

You're luckier than most.
"Update Now" doesn't even work for most users.
