my auto update attempts to download an update for the iMac. after it downloads, it begins to look for another update. after this, it goes to the same update and attempts to download the same update. what's wrong?

Is this an Office update? The MAU stores the file in Temporary Files folder.
If your drive is full this could present a problem. It could also be a
permissions problem. Run Repair Permissions.

I would download directly from Mactopia.

You'll find links for the AutoUpdate that is critical. Then you need the SP1
(12.1.0) update. Lastly the 12.1.1 update.
