AutoFilter Did Me Wrong

According to the help on Autofiltering you are supposed to be able to edit
filtered cells.

I have these spreadsheets that I have been editing in the filtered mode,
adding information into a particular column and copying it down through
filtered rows.

It was my understanding that only those cells in the filtered rows would
receive the copied information, but to my great dismay the information was
copied to all the cells in all the rows between the filtered rows, costing us
a lot of time, money and our reputation with our client.

What I want to know is, was I wrong in my belief or should the information
have gone only to the filtered cells?

Gary,

You need to select all the cells that you want to change, then use either
the "Select Visible Cells" button (which can be added to any toolbar, but
isn't usually visible), or use Edit | Go To.... "Visible cells only" prior
to making any changes. And make the changes using Ctrl-Enter....

Gary,

I should have mentioned that what you described _should_ work: did you
actually use the autofilter or did you hide some rows manually or through a
macro?
