Automatic email receipt

We are still using Outlook 98 here. We are being
bombarded with virus carrying email messages. We would
like to turn of the automatic checking of email from our
ISP and go to the remote mail method. As I understand
remote mail will allow us to look at the headers, download
what we want, and delete the rest.
I can see how to use remaote mail but I can't see where to
turn off the automatic checking and retrieving of email.
How do I turn off automatic email receipt.
