automatic virus scans

Whenever I create a new document from an existing document
Word requests a virus scan, as is stated in the Word
Status Bar. Is there any way to bypass this request so
that the document loads faster?

This is a function of your virus application. Norton AV in particular has a
naff office plug-in that is best turned off (from Norton AV).
