Automatically turns l + \ characters into a weird crossed lcharacter! How to prevent it?

I'm on Entourage 2004 in Panther. When I'm trying to type an email (or even
in emails that arrive), any time a lowercase "l" character is followed by a
"\" character, it auto-corrects them into a single and weird "l/" crossed l
character. How do I prevent this?!?

That only occurs with some fonts like Monaco. There are some threads
