AutoText entries turned to hyroglyphics

Several of my auto text entries now appear something like this:

ODONGAÿÿ.

They also contain several rectangle characters. Can anyone advise why this seems to happen all of a sudden, what causes it and can the auto text entries in their original characters be retrieved

Templates can become corrupt for a variety of reasons. Rename normal.dot to
oldnormal.dot and Word will build a new default template. You can use the
tools > macros > organizer to copy the undamaged personal autotext entries
from old template to new. The default autotext entries will be included with
the new template.
