I would love to be able to back up my mail to a CD, but can't seem to figure
out how to do it.

Any ideas?

Copy your entire Identity folder.

Rules, mailing lists, signatures, messages, data, schedules, contacts,
tasks, notes, calendar are located in:

Entourage X : ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office X Identities/your
identity

Entourage 2001: <Startup Disk>:Documents/Microsoft User Data: Office 2001
Identities:your identity

Note: your identity is called Main Identity unless you rename it.

But my Database file in that folder is 1.07 GB... Even when I deleted
(really deleted, not just moved to the Deleted Items folder) about
half of my saved messages, the size didn't go down. How can I made the
size of that file smaller?

The database will be left with 'wasted' space in it every time you delete
something. However, this is not all bad, since the wasted space is used up
with new data as it is added. This way, over a period of time (assuming that
you are deleting stuff as you go) the database will probably reach an
optimum size, after which the stuff you delete is roughly equal to the stuff
you add, and no further growth takes place.

If you need to recover the wasted space on your hard disk, you will have to
do a 'typical' rebuild to compact the database. This will create a compacted
version of the database without the wasted space. You will then have to
manually delete the backup copies of the original database that the rebuild
process creates AFTER you are happy the new one is OK.

See <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq/database.html> for more details.

(Actually it is the original database, renamed to "Old Database", not a
backup copy, that you delete after rebuilding, but everything else is
correct.)
