Back ups, RGE files, database Utility, ... better way?

I want to back up my entourage data -- email, contacts, calendar, ...

What I have done before is go to the file menu, chose export and export
to a .rge file and I keep that backup on a secondary hard drive.

This morning I tried to do a backup and as the export was running I got
an error message:

"There was a problem saving one of your messages. Your Office database
may be damaged. Start the database Utility to verify your database."

I ran the database utility verification and it it tells me the database
is fine. But when I try again to export I get the same error. So
there is "nothing wrong" but I can't export the file.

Any ideas?

And is there a better way to keep a backup for safety sake? Is
exprting to an rge file better than just finding the files on the disk
and copying them? Is there a way to automate the function? ...

I am running Entourage 2004 for Mac 11.1.0

My OS is OS X 10.3.9

And I'm running on a G5 iMac with a LaCie external hard drive.
