Background grading variants don't work

In Word - format - background - fill effects - gradient - two color -
horizontal
No matter which quadrant I select in the variants, I get the SW (lower left)
choice on my page. . . even though I have selected upper left and that's what
shows up in sample. What am I doing wrong?
