Backing up Contacts

W

William Schocke

I recently had to re-install system software, and then re-install
Entourage. Consequently, I lost most of my Contacts. I have been
able to rebuild my dtatbase for the most part, but I lost some
information forever.

I realize that making regular backups is the best way to avoid this
problem, so what is the best way to make a backup of my Contacts?

I would appreciate suggestions from anyone who can help...

If you want to back up everything, just make a copy of your Microsoft User
Data folder. The location for your version is described here:
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq/faqs.html#anchor-1a>

If you only want to back up the contacts in your Entourage database, you
have a few options. You could go to File -> Export Contacts. Another
option would be to go to the Address Book, optionally select all, and drag
to the Desktop. That creates vCard files for all of the selected contacts.

There are also some scripts out there for this purpose. "Export Contacts
E-E 1.0.2" for Entourage 2001 allows you to select contacts to export (like
the vCard method allows), and also maintains category data for your contacts
(neither of the previously mentioned methods do). "Export-Import
Entourage", a different product, allows you to do that in either 2001 or X
and much, much more. Both of these scripts can be found at Paul Berkowitz's
site:
