Bizarre behavior: mail messages are loaded into the inbox as folders(??!!)

Has anybody seen this before?

After a crash/reboot all of my email messages started loading into my inbox
(from the Exchange server) as folders...and the folder's name is the same
name as the emails subject-text, plus a *.eml extension (???!!!) When I try
and look at the folder it's empty.

Help!
