Black Link bar Buttons

R

Richard Buckland

I am designing a site that uses link bar buttons. When I
view the site with browsers (IE 6.0.2 & Netscape7.01) all
the Link Bar Buttons are black filled rectangles. They
still work, but no text is visible.I even tried publishing
the website to my hard drive, but the result is still the same.
Any ideas appreciated.

If you are using NVIDIA Video card this has been reported to be caused by using a graphics driver higher than 30.82 (downloaded from
Windows Update which offers 40.85?)

Other users have reported the rolling back to a specific WHQL certified NVIDIA driver clears the problem.
Download the older drivers, then UNinstall your version through add/remove programs first before installing the new drivers.
The W9x OS drivers are at:
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=win9x_archive
or for the XP or 2K OS are at:
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_archive"
In both cases users report rolling back to version 30.82 works to solve the problem

Quoted from another User
"I have all versions of the NVIDIA drivers and have found that all versions after 30.82 will cause this problem (even if they are
WHQL). I did a systematic retro-install of each previous version of the drivers until I got to version 30.82 which fixed the
problem."

Thanks for the idea.I am now running 30.82 drivers, but
still have black boxes where the buttons should be. I
tried 44.03 drivers in between with the same result. More
help would be appreciated.

Yep, forgot to mention you have to remove or apply the theme differently (what you did) for FP to recreate correct images

| Solved problem !!!
| Went to Format>Theme>Graphics
| Turned on 'Active Graphics'
| Now all my buttons appear with text in IE and Netscape.

I ran into this same problem (FrontPage 2002 generating _overlay and
_derived .gif files which are totally black...causing Link Bars to be
unreadable). I tried all sorts of fixes, including: deleting .gif
files, re-creating links and changing themes. Nothing worked.

My situation:
1) I was CREATING the web on an NVidia-based PC with Win98 and Nvidia
41.09 drivers.
2) But I was SERVING the web on an S3-based PC with WinXPPro and
default S3 drivers.
3) The served web page had black link bars when viewed from BOTH the
S3-based computer AND the NVidia-based computer.
4) My FrontPage PREVIEW pages looked fine. Link bars were perfect.
5) The .gif files in the _overlay and _derived Web directories were
clearly ALL-BLACK .gif files and deleting them and /Tools/Re-Calculate
Hyperlinks did NOT fix the problem. Black .gif files kept being
re-created.

Despite some discussion here about Nvidia video drivers being the
problem, I figured that it wasn't MY problem. BUT IT WAS. As soon as I
re-installed Nvidia version 30.82, deleted all the bad .gif files and
Re-Calculated the Hyperlinks, proper (NOT black) .gif files appeared
on the FrontPage PC.

However, there was STILL a problem with the web server. Even thought I
had FrontPage re-Publish and replace ALL files, the link bars had some
black backgrounds. Only when I went into FrontPage and
/Format/Theme/Modify/Graphics/Horizontal_Navigation and changed the
theme, did I get totally working horizontal link bars.

My conclusions:
a) FrontPage 2002 with Nvidia 41.09 drivers WILL create bad .gif
images (totally black). These will be black no matter what PC-video
card is SERVING the web page and no matter what PC-video card is
VIEWING the web page.
b) Returning to Nvidia 30.82 will fix the problem and new, non-black
..gif files can be created. However, getting a published web site
functional will require that the existing theme be modified, saved,
and completely published.

It's the "creating" machine (w/ ad video driver) that generates the black gifs originally
- from that point on all machines w/ any graphics driver will see the black gifs in the webs

Unless you change the theme (remove / reapply) in all webs w/ the black gifs
- FP will see the _overlay / _derived images are there (and not update them)

PS - glad you fixed your problem
