Black Screen Glitch Returning from Hyperlink

I seem to have this intermittent problem on some of my Dell Laptops:

I will hyperlink to a html or other PPT presentation, and all is fine.
But when I return to the original PPT by escaping (PPT) or exiting
(Explorer), I return to the proper PPT slide, but the screen is completely
black.

The only way to get the screen visible is to advance or go back a slide at
which point all is well. Of course, I'm no longer on the needed slide.

I'm guessing this is some kind of hardware glitch, but has anyone
encountered this or does anyone have any possible solutions?

Responding to my own question for the sake of others who might encounter
this issue...

I fixed it.

It's bizarre, but the problem can be fixed by turning off hardware graphics
acceleration.
