Bloated File

I have a very bloated (320 MB) Entourage file. The file name is "MESSAGES"
and it is located in a folder named "MAIN IDENTITY" which in turn is in a
folder named "OFFICE 2001 IDENTITIES" in the folder "MICROSOFR USER DATE".

I have deleted several messages, but the file size has not gotten any
smaller.

What can I do to reduce the size of this file?

(1) You would have to delete more than "several" messages to make a dent
in 320 MB.

(2) The most significant messages to delete would be the largest ones,
i.e. the ones containing attachments you've sent or received.

(3) You would have to rebuild the database (quit Entourage, and start it
up again while holding down the Option key).

To add to this statement, in case you don't know how to do it, to find the
large messages, look at your list of messages. At the top of the list will
be two places to click on, one which will switch between newest messages on
top and oldest messages on top. The second, the one on the left, will bring
up a pop-up menu which will allow you to select from a variety of ways to
sort your mail. One of them will be "size". Select size and then look at
the top of the list, where you will see the largest messages (probably the
ones with attachments). If you want, simply delete these. Or, make a
backup first. You can do this by clicking and dragging each email to an
empty folder in the Finder. Don't worry, the attachments get copied as
well. Then delete these large emails, quit Entourage, relaunch, compress
the database, and have a great day.
