Hi Group,

our Exchange Server 2003 connected Entourage 2008 blocked a attachment
(*.sea) cause its insecure. We cannot see any reason to block a
selfextracting archiv. Is there a possibility in Entourage to allow this
filetype for the future?

Thx in advance & Bye Tom

You'll have to take that up with your Exchange administrator.

I'm the exchange administrator but there is no possibility in exchange
server to allow or dissalow file extensions except the spam engine and
except the possibility in the servers registry to disallow *all* file
extensions in OWA (What entourage do, when its connected to an exchange
server). But in the spam engine I defined all file extension who became
disallowed but *.sea is not listed and the message from the spam engine is
not an internal client message but a simple textmail.

I believe I have to ask in this group for this issue...

Bye Tom

I agree with JR.

BTW, I assume that the reason SEAs are blocked is because they are
executable files, and opening any executable file that has come over the
Internet has inherent risk.

Sounds like you ought to check out one of the Exchange newsgroups instead of
this one. Go to the Microsoft News Server (msnews.microsoft.com) and look
for newsgroups whose names include "exchange". You'll find many (some in
German if that helps).
Good luck.

[Blocked attachments in Entourage]
Whatever it is, it's not Entourage.

Why can I save the same filetype (sea) with outlook [...] which is
connected to the same exchange server [...] when the server is the reason?
An exception for outlook?

BTW: The argument *entourage* doesn't block any file extension is
unqualified.

From mactopia.com:

[1]---------------------------snip--------------------------
To help protect your computer, Entourage blocks certain types of incoming
attachments because of their potential for introducing a virus into your
computer.

The following table identifies the file types that Entourage blocks.
..
..
..
------------------------------snap--------------------------

[2]---------------------------snip--------------------------
Cause: For security reasons, Entourage blocks attachments that could
potentially harm your computer.
[...]
Solution: If you trust the message sender and want to receive the
attachment, ask the sender to compress the file and then send it to you
again.
[...]
Notes:
Entourage blocks attachments that contain application files or other
potentially malicious software. Examples of these potentially harmful
attachments are files with an .exe, .app, or .pl extension.

When you forward a message that contains blocked attachments, Entourage
removes the blocked attachments before it sends the message.

See "Customize Entourage 2008 attachment settings"

As an administrator, you can view the default Attachment Policy property
list (.plist) file, which contains a list of the file types that Entourage
automatically blocks.

I don't see "sea" mentioned in that property list file.

Not all file types are blocked by file extension. Entourage can also
block on Mac OS File type and Mime type.

Because .sea files are applications they get blocked because the "APPL"
Mac OS File type is included in the list.

I have to appreciate but also shake my head at Microsoft's thinking on
the way they implemented this. While not simple to overcome, I don't
appreciate the fact that a non-admin user on a machine (or my company
network) can override this by modifying the .plist file and placing it
into his own user directory.

I'm raising a concern with Microsoft about this and suggest other
administrators do this as well.
