Bogus argument against Office 2004?

Silentsteve

I work for a large company that is slow to make any change or adoption
of newer software. I recently wrote the powers-that-be to petition for
my department to be allowed to upgrade to Office 2004 from Office X.
They replied with:

"There is a major issue with going to Office 2004. All files including
PST's are moved to the local drive. We do not have a backup solution
for the local drives. If your drive crashes . . . you lose all of your
data."

My question to this community is, is this a bogus argument against
Office 2004? What I mean is, doesn't this same behavior exist in the
currently approved Office X product?

Thank you all in advance. Your replies will help shape my next round
with MIS.

Yes it is bogus.

The filing of messages has not changed between Office vX & Office 2004.

Yes, you can put rules in place to move messages from the exchange server to
your local folders - in this case they can be deleted from the exchange
server and lost if your hard disk dies. However this applies to Office vX as
well as Office 2004.

Yes, exchange mail is synced to the local disk in entourage, but by default
it is NOT removed from the exchange server - it remains there and is
accessible to other clients. The local cache is only used for off-line
access to the mail (and for speed). This also applies equally to Office vX
and V2004.
