Bug: Accented characters with Mailman

D

David

Hello,

When you use accented characters like åäö in the subject line, and post to a
Mailman list (http://www.list.org), the subject will get messed up.
Värdelöst will look like V ä rdel ö st after the mail is recieved from the
listserver.

According to the Mailman developers, this problem is due to a broken non
standard Entourage mail client. The listserver is running Mailman 2.1.8 and
Entourage is version 11.2.3.

This bug is not new. Actually it's really old.
Please, please, fix it.

Blue Skies,
/David

More info about the Entourage crippled subject bug:
This is from one of the developers of the listserv Mailman.

I tested with my Entourage which I didn't use so far.
It gave:
Sm=?ISO-8859-1?B?9g==?=g=?ISO-8859-1?B?5Q==?=sbord
and ends up by processed by mailman email.Header module:
Sm =?iso-8859-1?q?=F6?= g =?iso-8859-1?q?=E5?= sbord

It looks like they break a statement of RFC-2047:
Ordinary ASCII text and 'encoded-word's may appear together in the same
header field. However, an 'encoded-word' that appears in a header
field defined as '*text' MUST be separated from any adjacent
'encoded-word' or 'text' by 'linear-white-space'.

This bug is not new. Actually it's really old.

I reported this in Entourage v.X. I reported it again when I got
Entourage 2004. Apparently the Entourage team take adherence to the
RFCs seriously, though in this case... :-(
Please, please, fix it.

Agreed!

Cheers,

Chris
