Bug in Outlook 2003's Reading Pane - it downloads attachments

S

Steve

Hi,

O2K3's Reading pane will download any attachments to a temporary folder
regardless as to the security settings within the application.

Can anyone else verify this please ?

This becomes noticable when the attachments contain viruses.... the virus
checker thankfully detects them, but... it probably wouldn't if the virus
was really new...

Thanks,

Steven.

I can verify that attachments are not placed on disk until they're opened.
Moreover, the reading pane will not execute code.

Any idea why mine would be written to the disk ?

e.g.
C:\Documents and Settings\steve\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\OLKB\readme.zip

The attachments are on hotmail messages.

If you were to open the zip file from within the message, then Outlook would
create the file you named. I have just tried it (again) and until I
actually opened the attachment, it was not written to the Outlook Secure
Temp Folder. If you see other behavior, then I believe you may have an
add-in that is automatically opening the attachment. It is not Outlook's
normal behavior.
